Day Three: The Mariners

The Seattle Mariners are up third of the 30 teams. Aside from a few trades, they had a pretty quite offseason.

Last Year: Last year was a year to forget for Seattle.  They finished 29 games back from the Texas Rangers and they were 28 games under .500. They need to make changes, but the money keeps shrinking to make valuable changes.

Acquisitions: Over the past offseason, the Mariners didn’t really do anything to improve. It’s tough to stomach, but Mariners fans have long come to grips with the mediocrity of their team.

Losses: When a team loses a lot of games, typically they need to deal at the deadline and in the offseason for payroll purposes, and the future of the team. But somehow the M’s manage to keep a bright spot in Felix Hernandez. Every year at the deadline, I look for a deal that will send him to a contender, but it never happens.

Outlook: The outlook is plain and simple. Not good. They’re playing in the wrong division right now. Hopefully the Angels acquisition of Pujols will put a couple more people in Seattle seats and make them a few extra dollars. Once again I will look for King Felix to be dealt this year, but I’ve been wrong for a while. 

30 Teams in 30 Days, Day 2: The Rangers

30 Teams in 30 Days continues with the Texas Rangers. This offseason, the Rangers made headlines with both acquisitions and losses. It should be an interesting season in Arlington, Texas.

Last Year: The Rangers finished a comfortable 10 games ahead of the Angels and won the AL West. They plowed through the AL division and championship series’ for the second straight year and reached the World Series. But, for the second straight year, they found themselves on the losing end.

Acquisitions: The large piece that the Rangers picked up this offseason was Japanese phenom Yu Darvish. He pitched wonderfully in the Pacific, but the Rangers must be wary that he could become the second edition of Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Losses: The main reason that Texas had to go out and pursue Yu Darvish was because of the key loss of C.J. Wilson. Wilson threw 223 innings last year and had an ERA under 3.00. His replacement hasn’t thrown an inning in the MLB yet.

Outlook: Even though they lost their number one starter to the Angels, the new wild-card system will keep the Rangers in the playoffs this year, at least for one game. Based on who the Angels acquired this offseason I don’t see how they could lose the West. Bringing in Darvish was a must after Wilson left, but the Rangers must be wary. Even though this guy has excellent stuff, he must be allowed to slowly transition into the MLB to have long-term success. 

30 Teams in 30 Days: The Angels

There are only 30 days until Opening Day 2012. To get past the longest month of the year I’ll blog about what I expect from each team this season. We’ll start with the AL West and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Last Year: Last season the Angels missed out on the playoffs for the second straight year, finishing 10 games back from first place Texas. They found a new general manager in Jerry Dipoto, and he started dealing right away.

Acquisitions: They are clearly in it to win it this year and future years after signing the marquee free agent Albert Pujols to a 10 year deal and pitcher C.J. Wilson to five years. They also traded for a new catcher Chris Iannetta from the Rockies and also Brad Mills, a lefty pitcher from Toronto.

Losses: When teams pick up a lot of players, sometimes they also lose a lot. This wasn’t true for the Angels. They did lose catcher Jeff Mathis and pitcher Tyler Chatwood     to trades, but they basically kept their team intact.

Outlook: The Angels are stacked! Forget about finishing 10 back in the division this year! I think they will easily contend for a World Series title. Look for C.J. Wilson to be a workhorse and Pujols to provide much needed power to this year’s lineup.

The Playoffs

Playoff baseball just got a little more exciting. Yesterday, the MLB and Players Union agreed to expand the postseason from an eight team format to 10 teams. Beginning this year, there will be an additional wild-card team in each league. This second wild-card does not have to come in second place in their division to be eligible. You just need the next best winning percentage. Three teams from the same division can now make the playoffs. Through this system, the two wild-card teams will play a one-game playoff in order for the right to play in the divisional series.

I think that this is the best thing that the MLB has done. In the past, one-game playoffs have been some of the most intense games in MLB history. Imagine having a whole 162 game season come down to playing one more game.

This one game also gives the division winners a huge advantage against the winning wild-card team. First, the division winner has had at least one day of rest. Second, they still have their number 1 pitcher ready to go! The wild-card team had to burn theirs just to get to this round.

This new system puts a whole new emphasis on winning the division. Now, when it seems like the AL East has two (or three) playoff teams, the race is still going to be important. The MLB has now ensured that all teams will play their butts off right to the end.
